Just Swimming Traineeship - Aquatic Hero Program

Just Swimming's Aquatic Hero Program (traineeship)

The Aquatic Hero Program is a Swimming Teacher traineeship that was initiated by Just Swimming in 2022 to address the chronic shortage of qualified swimming instructors in Victoria.
This program’s purpose is to make it easy and accessible for members of the local community to commence a career in teaching swimming. Our in-house program has been extremely successful over the last 3 years in ensuring swimming instructors are completing their training in a timely yet comprehensive manner, and ensures the highest standard of swimming teachers are progressing from the program and into our Learn to Swim program.

Operation

The program takes place every end of term/school holidays, over a 4-week intensive period. This 4-weeks combines:
·      Supported in-pool training
·      Out of water theory sessions
·      Shadow teaching
·      Swim Australia Course
·      CPR
·      Working with Children’s Check
In order to complete this traineeship, applicants must commit to 4 days a week over the 4-week period.
There is also a non-intensive option. This term-based traineeship takes place over an 8-10 week block that coincides with the Victorian School terms. Training will take place for 6-hours a week during the term, in a timeslot that suits you!
Please note – Swim Australia requires trainees to complete a MINIMUM of 10 hours shadow teaching. More may be required and is up to the discretion of our Just Swimming supervisors/assessors.

Earn as you Learn

Our program also supports trainees in earning as they learn, and does not require any unpaid training to take place. Just Swimming is committed to their trainees, and displays this by covering the cost of their Swim Australia course, CPR training and employee Working with Children’s Check. This offer has attracted many trainees to apply for our program, and has allowed us to launch the aquatic career of over 50 trainees since the commencement of the program in September 2022.

FAQ'S

It is not a pre-requisite to complete CPR before enrolling however, we do recommend candidates hold this certificate before undertaking on the job /in-pool training. To reach accreditation, the Swim Australia certification cannot be issued without a current CPR.

Once you have completed the Swim Australia course and have your CPR qualification as well as your employee Working with Children Check, we may assist you with in-pool hours for your accreditation given you intend to work for Just Swimming upon gaining full accreditation.

All candidates should wear comfortable clothing for the theory sessions and a drink bottle. For the practical in-water sessions where you will be in the pool, you’ll need to bring suitable swimwear, towel and goggles. For further information please refer to the Swim Australia website.

Most importantly, don’t forget your smile and a can-do attitude!

Everyone learns at a different pace and has a varied background with both swimming and working with children.  For this reason, the time it takes to become competent ranges from person to person.

We recommend completing your practical supervised teaching hours as soon as possible following on from the Swim Australia course. This assists in retaining information learnt and can see you achieve your hours faster.

We’re always on the lookout for fun and bubbly teachers who love water as much as we do. Just Swimming has three swim schools in Melbourne’s outer east located in Forest Hill, Glen Waverley and Ringwood East. We’re also owned and operated by Nunawading Swimming Club, a high-performance swimming club with world-renowned coaches. We draw on their knowledge regularly to ensure our swimming teachers are trained at the highest standard.
