Become an Austswim Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety

Get accredited to become a teacher of Swimming and Water Safety facilitated with AUSTSWIM, who are all about the love of water and teaching people how to swim well. Conducted by industry leaders the course provides experienced presenters who will guide you through the process of how to complete the AUSTSWIM course and will be there to assist you every step of the way in becoming a certified swimming instructor.

During the course, you’ll learn how to plan and deliver a swimming lesson, water familiarisation, buoyancy and mobility, principles of movement in the water, teaching safer diving skills and most importantly, how to be an effective swimming teacher. Visit their website to see what’s involved in being a swimming instructor and if this career path interests you.

With various course locations around Melbourne, it’s simple to participate in a conveniently located AUSTSWIM course near you. All participants must be 16 years of age and can commence teaching swimming from 17 years of age.

AUSTSWIM courses require face to face attendance over two full days with each day broken into a theory classroom-style component in the morning and in-water practical experience in the afternoon.

To assist in full completion, Just Swimming Nunawading also runs the required CPR qualification course and will support the practical supervised teaching hours essential for accreditation. A working with children check is also mandatory.

If working with children and teaching lifesaving skills interests you, head to the AUSTSWIM educators in aquatics website for more information or to book, or you can email us at training@justswimming.com.au

It is not a pre-requisite to complete CPR before enrolling however, we do recommend candidates hold this certificate before undertaking on the job /in-pool training. To reach accreditation, the AUSTSWIM certificate cannot be issued without a current CPR.

Once you have completed the 2-day AUSTSWIM course with us and have your CPR qualification, we’ll assist you with in-pool hours for your accreditation.

All candidates should wear comfortable clothing for the theory sessions and a drink bottle. For the practical in-water sessions where you will be in the pool, you’ll need to bring suitable swimwear, towel and goggles.

Most importantly, don’t forget your smile and a can-do attitude!

Everyone learns at a different pace and has a varied background with both swimming and working with children.  For this reason, the time it takes to become competent ranges from person to person.

We recommend completing your practical supervised teaching hours as soon as possible following on from the two-day AUSTSWIM course. This assists in retaining information learnt and can see you achieve your hours faster.

We’re always on the lookout for fun and bubbly teachers who love water as much as we do. Just Swimming has four swim schools in Melbourne’s outer east located in Forest Hill, Burwood, Glen Waverley and Ringwood East. We’re also owned and operated by Nunawading Swimming Club, a high-performance swimming club with world-renowned coaches. We draw on their knowledge regularly to ensure our swimming teachers are trained at the highest standard.
