JUST SWIMMING FAQs
Just Swimming takes enrolments from 4 months of age and caters to all ages and abilities including adults, meaning anyone can learn to swim!
Are you wondering what age to start swimming lessons for your child? While there is no right or wrong time to start learning to swim, commencing learning to swim from a young age will help students progress through levels at an increased pace as they’ve developed water familiarisation early on.
Children who can walk and have not had swimming lessons, are not aware of the dangers that water can pose and have little awareness of depth perception. Starting lessons young also, means that your children are becoming safer around water sooner which is when children are at a high risk of an aquatic related incident taking place.
Just Swimming offers a free 6 week Baby Starfish program. These newborn baby swimming classes are for those from 4 months of age and teach parents specific activities that enhance a child’s in-born natural reflex.
Young babies are not born to have the emotion of fear, therefore commencing lessons before they can weigh up their options, and become a little anxious about the aquatic environment is a great time to start.
Just Swimming offers swimming lessons from Babies all the way to Adults, so that there are learning opportunities for everyone!
Enrolment into swimming lessons is easy and hassle-free. We complete the following steps to ensure a smooth transition into our lessons.
- Free swimming assessment and trial
- Identify the best time, day and teacher
- Enrol and receive a welcome pack to commence your lessons
For anyone looking to enrol into our program, we offer a free swimming assessment to give us a good understanding of swimming ability and the most appropriate group for you or your child.
Whether you have multiple children or just a busy household with other commitments, we will always work with you to identify the best time, day and teacher for you or your child.
We understand families who have multiple children often prefer for all children to swim at once. We have multiple swimming levels running at the same time and we will always do our best to enrol all children in or around the same time slot. We also offer a discount for multiple students and multiple enrolments.
Once enrolled, students swim at the same day and time each week and your child will receive a certificate each time they complete the level they are working to achieve. If your schedule changes and you require an alternative time, this can be arranged via our friendly customer service staff.
Lessons at Just Swimming are term based, and priority of the same lesson time and day is given to existing customers, meaning once you are enrolled into the program, your enrolment will continue from term to term as you choose.
There are 14 swim school levels for students to achieve. Each certificate has a number of skills a student is required to complete, before moving to the next level. Each skill is deliberately introduced at a particular level to ensure continual progression.
Key skills we teach at Just Swimming include:
Water safety skills – Safe Entries & Exits, Floating, Treading Water, Techniques for clothed survival swimming and more.
Mobility skills – We teach students to move forward through the water with a good foundation of body position, kicking and breath control. This is referred to as streamlining with forward movement.
Swimming strokes – Once the foundations are in place, we teach students to be proficient in Freestyle, Backstroke, Survival Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly and Sidestroke.

Learning to swim is much like learning to read or write and it can take time to establish a sound swimming ability.
Many factors can play a role in how long it takes to establish basic swimming skills. This can include consistency in attendance, how frequent a student participates (once or twice a week) if the student has a fear of water and the age of the student.
Whilst, each factor can impact how long it takes to learn to swim, there is no better solution to learn to swim than frequent participation and it is never too late to start.
Many people have varied perspectives of what ‘can swim’ looks like.
The Victorian Water Safety Certificate provides the National benchmark of what a competent swimmer should be able to achieve. Our Seal Gold level is the comparison level to the Victorian Water Safety Certificate and this should be the level students aim to achieve before being deemed a competent swimmer.
