Stroke Technique – Why it’s important to swim correctly.

 

There are many ways you can teach someone to swim. Different countries choose different strokes to teach first and from swim school to swim school there are evident differences in how they teach students to swim. Some teach with kick boards, some without, some use fins, some don’t. The most important part is ensuring students are equipped with the right skills to swim correctly and competently.

So why is it important to swim correctly? At Just Swimming, importance is placed on having a good swimming foundation. A strong, propulsive kick, good body and head position, which will always reduce resistance when a person is swimming through the water.

Meaning, if a student found themselves in trouble in the water, they could potentially maintain their skills for a longer period of time than a swimmer who is less technically correct.

Of course other factors might play a role in survival swimming, however there is no doubt that a competent swimmer with correct stroke technique will be able to stay afloat in the water having less stress on the body, than a swimmer with a weak or less correct stroke.

Swimming correctly helps to prevent injuries. A swimmer who is swimming technically correct is less likely to recover with aches and pains.

We also aim to teach students to swim technically correct, as this provides them with an increased likelihood to swim at a competitive level. 

Swimming correctly can also increase a swimmers fitness  and capabilities in the water. The longer they can maintain the stroke, the more fitness levels they can increase by.Why it's important to swim correctly

Our staff are taught  to teach each stroke progressively; teaching body position, legs, arms and breathing separately and then putting the stroke together. Being owned and operated by the Nunawading Swimming Club,  our teachers are provided with unique training opportunities, often learning from some of the best swimming coaches in the country.

In summary, its important to learn to swim correctly because the more competent you are in the water, the better chances you have to survive if ever in trouble. There are so many benefits to learning swimming and water safety skills, and swimming really is like no other sport.
