Many of our students choose to wear rash vests and long board shorts in their swimming lessons. Rash vests and board shorts are especially great for keeping warm during the winter months and for sun protection in Summer. However, wearing them to a swimming lesson can be detrimental to your performance.

Rash vests and board shorts are more likely to absorb water compared to other swimming costumes. This creates drag or resistance making it harder for swimmers to propel themselves forward. It can also cause swimmers to sink and find it difficult to achieve a good body position on the surface of the water.

Another potential disadvantage of wearing a rash vest is that they can restrict shoulder and arm movement (particularly in freestyle), making it hard for swimmers to achieve correct technique.

Some of our students who usually wear rash vests to their swimming lessons tested out our theories and said how much easier it was to swim. For more information please do not hesitate to chat to our friendly team leaders.
